Ian Morgans journey to becoming an accomplished runner started badly. He was running the 2015 Queenstown Marathon when he got a pain in his shoulder and started struggling to breath. He collapsed and was taken by ambulance to the local hospital. The doctors discovered heart disease and performed surgery to widen his arteries.

Ian wanted to keep running, so his doctor asked him to take his cellphone in case something happened. From here Ian’s online fame started and before long his Instagram account literally went nuts. The pinnacle moment for online fame came when he posted a photograph of himself running topless past the Governments home or the ‘Beehive’ in Wellington City.

The beard by all accounts grew in the wake of his heart surgery, and became part of his online image. With a weekly count of between 80 – 140km Ian has completed many races to include the Boston Marathon, Queens Town Marathon, and recently an ultra distance at the Motatapu.

I met up with Ian recently in his home town of Christchurch in the iconic Porthills as part of our inspiring runner series. Meanwhile here are the images we captured.
