The good news is, when you finally do run your next 100km (because, let’s face it, you will), you’ll know stuff. You’ll know how much it hurts. And that you’ll be in a world of pain for days afterwards. You’ll know that, yes, you will sob like a baby at the finish line, and maybe a few kilometres before that when you realise you’re not finished yet. You’ll know your family and friends will cheer you on every step of the way (so long as they can find the checkpoints). And most importantly, you’ll know you have what it takes to get the job done.
The Three Passes Route crosses the New Zealand’s Southern Alps in 50 rugged alpine kilometres. Starting from the Waimakariri River, near Christchurch, the route crosses Harman, Whitehorn, and Browning Passes and finishes on the West Coast near Hokitika.

We go way back. Northburn is such a treat. I am in love with this region, people and vibe of a truly wild NZ experience. This race holds a special place in my heart with it being one of my first events to shoot as a photographer back in 2012. I’ve watched it every year since as the pure GRIT unfolds. This year I ran the half marathon mountain run.
After a few years of marathoning experience, researching and experimenting with multiple training plans, and picking the brains of my running friends who way more hardcore than me, I figured that the formula to run faster marathons boiled down to three things.
